Welcome to Patriot High School!
I am Dr. Michael E. Bishop, and I am the principal of Patriot High School. Welcome to our website. Our school opened on September 6, 2011. We have worked very diligently to match the learning environment that has been created in this building with an instructional staff that would compliment and support that. We are very excited to have found such a wonderful group of people to serve the students of this community.
I have been a high school administrator for nine years, with this being my seventh as a Principal. I was appointed as the Principal of Patriot in April of 2010 and assumed my duties on July 1, 2010. I have been in education for 21 years, having started my career in Stafford County. This is the third school that I have helped to open, having worked as a teacher and administrator at two other new schools (Hanover High in 2003 and Cosby High in 2006). I taught AP US History prior to becoming an administrator, and have been blessed to be able to continue to teach through the George Washington University as an adjunct professor.
I have a BS in Secondary Education from Youngstown State University, an MA in Educational Administration from GWU, and a Doctorate in Educational Administration and Policy Studies from GWU. The focus of my doctoral dissertation was the impact that a new high school has on student achievement, student and staff attitudes, and behaviors. I completed my doctoral research in 2008 using three new high schools in the state of Virginia. I also completed a certification program through San Diego State University and CEFPI and am a certified educational facility planner.
My wife and I are the proud parents of three boys, ages eleven, eight, and three years old. They are excited to be a part of this community as well.
Our school offers five different Specialty programs for students to choose from: AP Scholars, Project Lead the Way (Engineering), Building Trades, Culinary Arts, and Early Childhood Education. The building was designed to optimize student learning and provide a comfortable, safe, and secure environment for students to learn. I am pleased to report that Patriot High School ranks in the top 35 of all high schools in the northern Virginia area, ninth in the state of Virginia, and in the top 3% of all high schools in the nation based on the Washington Post Challenge Index for 2014. In 2014, 55% of all students who took an AP exam, received a qualifying score on that exam which qualifies for college credit.
Our school's success is due to the fact that we have selected leaders, educators, and staff members who have helped to create a Twenty First Century High School. Patriot High School and the community it serves help to produce young adults who possess the academic, social and community skills that demonstrate an essential knowledge of the world in which we live. We maintain high expectations and provide opportunities for students to excel in Academic, Career and Technical related course work, as well as real life programs such as Building Trades and Project Lead the Way.
We will always encourage students to develop their full leadership potential, demonstrate integrity in their actions, understand the importance of character, and, consistently display pride: pride in their accomplishments, community, and school.
Welcome to Patriot High School.
